Have you read the Bible? As in, really read it with a view to studying it?

It is fascinating and deeply revealing, as well as being the foundation of 2 millennia of Western civilisation. And yet so few compatriots or even Christians have had a thorough read. It is well worth doing. And quickly shows how and why we in The West are getting so much wrong.

Although I am a Christian today, I wasn’t always. Coming to faith as an adult having always valued the importance of logic, metaphysics and philosophy means that rather than just imbibe Biblical ideas, I scrutinise and interrogate them and look for meaning in metaphor and real world application. I want to truly understand it and test its teachings in a modern context.

And you don’t have to look far to find stark warnings and poignant prophesies that are hauntingly accurate today.

I want to share some of my ‘finds’ with you.

Now, I am neither ordained, nor a theologian, but a lay person. So those of you with a better grasp may not agree with some of my interpretations.

It got me thinking about our ups and downs as a nation. Our periods of great progress, prosperity and innovation, which have largely been when we have been a confident and assertive Christian nation. And today, where we have replaced the concept of God with seemingly limitless permissiveness, quasi-religious ideologies and increasingly inversions of truth.

The Bible repeatedly warns that when a people turn away from God, bad things ensue. Whether you believe this is the direct intervention of God, His wrath or judgment, or merely transition from harmonious and ordered society performing to its optimum, to a divided and multicultural one without shared mores and values, depends on your own faith.

But it is nonetheless fascinating to look at millennia-old recipes for success - or doom - that shaped our past, and are very much at work today.

It will send a shiver to your soul!
